Taxi and private hire driver applications

Despite the Department for Transport publishing Best Practice Guidance, each local authority publishes its own licensing policy with local requirements. This can be confusing, particularly where there are numerous adjoining districts with differing standards. The biggest areas of difference relate to testing requirements (e.g. knowledge test, safeguarding training, etc.) and how each local authority interprets any historic convictions.

We have experience of working in local authority taxi and private hire licensing for over 21 years, and we have detailed knowledge of the regulations and requirements that govern taxi and private hire driver licensing. We have extensive knowledge of interpreting local policy and understand the importance of every case being determined on its own merits, not just applying policy without considering mitigation.

We understand the challenges and complexities of navigating taxi and private hire licensing law in England. We can provide you with comprehensive, practical advice and support to help you meet the requirements and regulations of your local authority.

Our services are priced on a case-by-case basis, depending on the complexity and the amount of time and resources required. We believe in providing our clients with transparent pricing, so you’ll know what to expect from the outset. We offer competitive rates and will work with you to find a payment plan that suits your needs.

What we will do:

  • Discuss your specific requirements and suggest suitable licences based on your business plan
  • Pre-app liaison with the local authority to establish whether you are likely to meet the local licensing policy requirements if you have historic convictions
  • Advice on what supporting documentation is needed to accompany the application (including checking if requested)
  • Completion of the licensing application form (seeking your approval and signature before submission)
  • Submission of the application form and associated documentation to the licensing authority
  • Advice on the relevant application fee (payable directly to the local authority by you)
  • Liaison with the local authority until a determination of the application is made
  • Attendance at a taxi licensing committee (virtual or in person) where necessary

What's not included:

  • Legal representation at Magistrates or Crown Court for appeals against licence refusals, suspensions, or revocations
  • Local authority application fee or any additional fees such as knowledge tests, DBS, etc.
